A section of the trail at Felker’s Falls Conservation Area will be off limits to the public for six weeks to allow for the construction of a new pedestrian bridge over Davis Creek.
Matt Hall, construction designer for the Hamilton Conservation Authority, said the area by the bridge will be closed on Monday and remain shut until April 18 as workers install a bigger bridge.
Bestco Construction Ltd. of Ancaster beat out seven other companies to win the contract for the steel bridge, which will be 24 metres long and three metres wide, with a lowest bid of $106,000.
The project is being funded by the Heritage Green Community Trust, which disperses royalties from the area’s Taro industrial dump, and John Deere Ltd.
It is part of a plan to connect Felker’s Falls Conservation Area to Heritage Green Community Sports Park later this year and link them to the East Mountain Loop Trail.
The authority plans to salvage the existing bridge for potential use elsewhere.
