Ancaster resident charged in Burlington sexual assaults

By David Lea
Oakville Beaver

An Oakville sailing coach and Ancaster resident is facing multiple charges in connection with a series of alleged sexual assaults against four former members of the Burlington Sailing and Boat Club.

The victims, who came forward Wednesday, told police the alleged assaults happened in the Oakville, Burlington, Nepean and Kingston areas when they were between the ages of 13-16 years old.

Police said the accused volunteered with the Burlington club for more than a decade. The alleged incidents date back to as early as 2003.

For the past two years, the accused has volunteered at the Bronte Harbour Yacht Club (BHYC), 2514 Lakeshore Rd., W., as head of a sailing school, which includes a racing team.

Brian Miller, BHYC commodore, said the accused was directed to take a leave of absence on Wednesday after the Halton Children’s Aid Society (CAS) contacted the club stating an investigation was in progress.

“We asked him to leave and he did,” said Miller.

“We are obviously shocked by this. The minute we heard from the CAS on this we took action. We met with (the accused). We have communicated the leave of absence to our paid staff, our board of directors and are in the process of getting this out to our membership…We are not aware of anything that has happened at Bronte Harbour at all. Nobody has come forward to us. The police haven’t said anything to us at all and we will be communicating this with our membership and our sailing school families.”

The accused was arrested Thursday after turning himself in and is being held pending a bail hearing, which is scheduled to take place in a Milton Court on Friday.

Sean Hewson, 31, of Ancaster has been charged with 16 Criminal Code offences pertaining to sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual exploitation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the the Halton Regional Police Service Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Bureau’s Det. Sgt. John Mans 905-465-8760.
