Three 17-year-olds will become the first Canadians to play for the prestigious EDSV academy at Oakland’s College in St. Albans, United Kingdom, next month.
Keani Fairbanks of Dundas and Luke McConnell graduated from the FC Schalke program in Hamilton, while Matthew Wilson came through the Oakville Soccer Club.
EDSV head coach Chris Watters said there here were a number of reasons the players were offered the opportunity to play in the U.K.
“Firstly, and probably most importantly, was their desire and commitment,” said Watters. “The sheer fact that they’re prepared to move halfway around the world to help themselves develop says a lot to me. On top of that, they all had a solid level of technical ability and an understanding of what their position on the pitch entails. It’s going to give us a good basis to build upon.”
