There was never any doubt in Matt Sehl’s mind that like his father, James, he would develop a passion for motorcycles.

Matt was just four years old the first time he climbed atop his dad’s motorbike and went for a spin.

“It really gets your heart pumping,” he said. “It’s a rush, you could say, just how much fun it is.”

The 16-year-old Ancaster High student  has been flat track racing on and off ever since. One of the best nights of his career took place recently at Welland County Speedway. Matt swept the intermediate division with wins in the open and 450cc racing classes for the second time in as many weeks. The first-place finish in the 450cc feature was his third straight and fourth in five races this season. Matt placed second in his only other start in 2014.

“It was a very special night for me because I ended up taking both the classes,” said Matt.

Flat track racing provides one of the most thrilling spectacles in motor sports. Riders finesse their motorcycles  through the turns just inches apart at speeds of over 100 m.p.h.

Matt said he plans to continue competing every Saturday night this season at the Welland track.

He has just two goals in mind.

“I want to continue doing well and keep it on two wheels, not crash.”
