Will the addition of another financial institution at the corner of Highway 8 and Green Road cause additional parking headaches for area businesses?
Stoney Creek councillor Maria Pearson hopes not.
“I don’t believe we will see much of a problem,” said Pearson.
Councillors agreed to a zoning modification and Official Planning amendment to allow a credit union and an animal hospital to be located in a small plaza on Highway 8 beside the current TD Canada Trust, and across the street from EZEE Clean car wash.
Scott Murray, the owner of the car wash, said when the parking area at the TD Canada Trust is filled, people start parking on his property, with some keeping their vehicles there for half an hour so they can do their banking. He said by adding another bank at the plaza, parking will remain at a premium.
He said it doesn’t make sense to call municipal bylaw enforcement because the people drive away before the officers get there.
Also located across the street is Scotiabank.
Pearson agreed there have been “issues” at the car wash, which Murray is looking at expanding.
“We will work with him to address it,” she said.
But the ward councillor says the vehicular turnover will be enough to allow sufficient parking in the commercial plaza so it won’t impact the car wash property.
“It is a credit union,” she said. “The whole site will see people going in and out.”
Currently, the single-storey, 784-square-meter plaza, which was built in 2009, has a restaurant, nail salon and day spa. The planning amendments will allow a bank institution and an enclosed animal hospital to locate in the building.
Meridian Credit Union is planning to open up a branch in the plaza, the sixth in Hamilton, stated Bill Whyte, senior vice-president and chief member service officer at Meridian.
“We are trying to do something that is good for this property,” said Nick DiFillipis, the agent for the property owner.
He added the animal facility will be enclosed and it won’t offer an outdoor track to disrupt neighbours.
