Relay for Life raises $95,000 and counting

Thirty-eight teams of 385 people raised more than $95,000 — and they had a great time doing it.

There was never a dull moment during the June 20, 12-hour Relay for Life event at Ancaster fairgrounds, with everything from musical entertainment to a Twister tournament, Minute to Win It games and a selfie competition to keep participants awake and engaged.

“People seemed to absolutely love the night,” said Candice Coghlan, fundraising coordinator for the Hamilton Wenworth unit. “There were things to do all night long. No one was ever bored. We had everything from bands to social media events. For the little ones, there were crafts and games and an absolutely adorable pajama fashion show.”

The highly successful Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser sees teams pitch tents and walk around the track overnight to symbolize the fact cancer never sleeps.

The Lee Academy Wolves were the top money-raising team this year, gathering a total of $6,000 and counting.

Coghlan said the Lynden school community lost two people to cancer in the past year — office assistant Jane Stroud and Noel Spratt, who taught physical education classes from 2004-2006 and supply taught for the junior and senior school until 2011.

As in previous years, survivors launched the evening at 7 p.m. with an emotional and inspirational first lap. At 10 p.m., thousands of luminaries were lit to celebrate those who have waged a successful battle against cancer and others who have lost the fight. The relay wound down in the morning with breakfast prepared by the Lions Club.

“It was a really amazing night that wouldn’t have been possible without our sponsors, all those who attended, all our volunteers and our organizing committee who did a fantastic, wonderful job,” said Coghlan.
