Hudak wins Niagara West-Glanbrook, but steps down as party leader

Stoney Creek News

Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak has won Niagara West-Glanbrook, but has decided to step down as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party. He will stay on as leader until a replacement can be chosen and will continue to sit as an MPP at Queen's Park.

At Hudak headquarters the announcement was made before a shell-shocked crowd who were resigned to the inevitability of his resignation given the loss the party had suffered.

As of 10:50 p.m. Hudak has amassed 40.8 per cent of the votes, 4,921 votes ahead of Liberal challenger David Mossey a distant second with 27.9 per cent. The NDP’s Brian McCormack sits in third with 23.4 per cent, while the Green Party’s Basia Krzyzanowski is running fourth with 5.2 per cent. Rounding out the field are Libertarian Stefanos Karatopis at 1.8 per cent and Freedom Party of Ontario’s Geoff Peacock with 0.5 per cent.

In 2011, Hudak had a nearly 12,000 vote margin of victory over Liberal Katie Trombetta.
