The fun games are back.
About 130 Hamilton seniors are taking part in the annual 55 + Games (formerly Hamilton Senior Games) that got underway last week.
“We want them to come out and enjoy themselves,” said District 23 games chair Phil Morris.
District 23 covers the pre-amalgamation portion of Hamilton while seniors living in the former Wentworth County are in District 22.
The games feature 14 events including horseshoes, pickleball, bowling, darts, carpet bowling and a variety of card games at a variety of locations in across the city.
Morris noted the number of participants is down 10-20 over previous years.
He said that’s probably due to more people in the 55-65 age group are still working and other seniors are keeping busy with computers and other activities.
For many seniors the games are a great way to stay busy and make new friends.
“You don’t have to be good,” Morris said. “It’s all fun.”
While registration took place at city recreation centres last month, Morris said there are still openings in a number of events and seniors can call him at 905-529-3623 to see what’s available.
The games run to May 23 and the medal winners will be invited to the annual winner’s circle luncheon on June 24 at the Sackville Hill Seniors Recreation Centre as part of seniors’ month.
Morris said gold medal winners are also entitled to take part in the Ontario 55 + Summer Games in Windsor Aug. 19-21.
