Catarino House to help kids cope

Hamilton Mountain News

By Gord Bowes, News staff

A new charity opening this fall will focus on helping children up to age 18 cope with the life-threatening illness they face.

Catarino House will be offering reiki treatments, meditation and visualization therapies, art therapy and music therapy for children ages 8 to 18 living with cancer and other life-threatening conditions — all at no cost.

There’s really nothing like what Catarino House will offer, says Jeanne Albert, chair of the Catarino House board.

“We offer reiki and meditation for adults, but there’s nothing like this in Canada offering these treatments for children,” said Albert.

The charity, founded by Maria Catarino, a reiki master, was registered last October. It will operate out of Olivet United Church on the central Mountain.

Right now, donations and volunteers are being assembled ahead of the September opening. Hours of operation are also being determined.
