Work will begin soon on St. Jean de Brebeuf’s artificial turf field.
The design is set and construction should be completed in time for football season this fall, said Pat Daly, chair of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.
“We’re gung ho about being completed for September,” he said.
The board and the city had an agreement to share small parcels of land where the field is situated and next door at Billy Sherring Park. They recently completed a swap which put the whole field under the board’s ownership.
With that finalized and the long winter over, work can begin soon, said Daly.
Davan Landscape Design Build got the contract for the $1.18 million project, which will also include a press box.
A dome to cover the field had been discussed by the board, but that idea is on hold, said Daly.
The new field, along with the ones at St. Thomas More, Bishop Ryan and Cardinal Newman, are being managed by Nustadia Recreation. The company will lease the fields to community sports groups on nights and weekends; the school board will get a portion of the profit to offset the cost of the artificial turf installations.
Daly said no decision has been made on upgrading the grass fields at Bishop Tonnos, Cathedral and St. Mary.
“We’re hoping they all get done, but we don’t have any firm timelines yet,” he said.
