Volunteers won’t be removing snow from sidewalks on the west Mountain next winter.
A proposed pilot project for the Buchanan Park neighbourhood was shot down at a public meeting Tuesday night.
Only about four hands went up in support of the idea at the end of the meeting attended by about 20 area residents.
Ward 8 councillor Terry Whitehead had proposed a pilot project for the neighbourhood which would have between eight and 14 volunteers clearing snow from the community’s 22 kilometres of sidewalks with a specially designed tractor supplied by the city.
Opponents of the project expressed concerns about the logistics of organizing the volunteers and the time it would take to clear the sidewalks. They also suggested this year’s harsh winter was an anomaly and there were more pressing needs in the community.
