New Concession Street BIA director relishes new job

The new executive director of the Concession Street Business Improvement Area says he’s had nothing but positive vibes since taking over the job on Feb. 3.
“It’s a great street,” said 49-year-old Carlo Gorni. “It’s a great mix of locally owned businesses…and with the proximity of the hospital, there’s a lot of healthcare professionals on the street as well.”
Gorni replaces Kim Pinczel, who joined the BIA last fall but left after only a few months in the part-time job.
“It’s been positive so far,” said Gorni, who has noted he has visited most of the businesses at least once.
Gorni said the Juravinski Hospital Hospital and Cancer Centre is the largest employer on the street and he’s working on a plan to increase BIA exposure to hospital employees but would not provide any further details.
With next year’s reconstruction of Concession Streetnow in the planning stages, Gorni said the BIA wants to work with the city on the design and to ensure the work is as least disruptive to the business owners as possible.
“The businesses want to see where practical, a more greening of the street,” Gorni said. “May be we could see if some trees could be incorporated for example.”
The reconstruction plan must also maintain on-street parking.
“Just for that constant turnover,” said Gorni, who would also like to see some zebra stripe style markings put down at cross walks along the BIA. “To make it safer for people to cross the street.”
The Lime Ridge Mall area resident is no stranger to the issues surrounding small businesses.
From 1997 to 2002 he was the executive director of the downtown Hamilton BIA.
He also spent five years as a senior policy analyst with the Greater Toronto Home Builders Association and worked as director of admissions and community relations at the Canadian Institute of Dental Hygiene.
