Braves hammered at GHAC

Loss gives Mountain school incentive to rebound at OFSAA

 By Mark Newman, News Staff

With both teams guaranteed a spot at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) AAA/AAAA championships later this month, Wednesday afternoon’s Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) boys hockey final did not have the atmosphere of urgency or season-ending elimination of previous years.

And the St. Jean de Brebeuf Braves played like it.

“We played our worst game of the season,” said Braves head coach Mark Fama after his troops were thumped 8-1 by Halton champion Abbey Park Eagles from Oakville at the Morgan Firestone Arena in Ancaster. “They were flat and it showed right from the first period onward.”

Matt Hogan scored the Braves only goal of the game in the second period.

Chris Boushy and Foster Cuomo scored two goals each for Abbey Park, while Evan Herniak, Cam McKenzie, Alex Cox and Alex Harshaw scored one goal each.

“I think the guys had OFSAA on their minds,” said Braves forward Jake Morrison.

The 18-year-old fifth year student said the one-sided loss does not reflect the team’s ability and it will serve as an incentive for the Braves to pick up their game at the provincial tournament in Oakville March 18-21.
