Avs still in hunt for fourth place

Ancaster News

By Larry Robertson, Special to The News

Two wins in three games kept the Ancaster Avalanche in the hunt for fourth place in the Golden Horseshoe Conference Junior B standings as they head into their final three regular season games.

On Friday, Feb. 21 the team travels to Caledonia for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Corvairs. They end the regular season schedule with back-to-back games on Feb. 22 23 against the Niagara Falls Canucks and the Port Colborne Pirates.

This past week, the Avalanche edged the Thorold Blackhawks 3-2 in a shootout, then fell 3-1 to the second-place Corvairs before rallying to edge the Welland Junior Canadians 6-5 at Welland.

Michael Pollice scored twice, but Max Balinson had the final say as he scored the game-winner at 18:39 of the third period to lead the Avs past Welland.  Luke Zupan with a goal and two assists had a three-point night for Ancaster.  Blake Luscombe and Hayden Guitard added single goals. Ryan Lewis, Jake Bain and Zach Nieminen each assisted on two of the Avs goals.

A pair of third-period goals gave the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs the wins in front of 257 fans on Boots and Skirts Country Night last Saturday at Firestone arena.  Lewis scored Ancaster’s lone goal on a second-period power play.

Last Thursday in Thorold, Lewis and Guitard scored once each as the Avalanche edged the Blackhawks 3-2.
