McCoys, Blast game may decide playoff positions

Dundas Star News

By Larry Robertson, Special to The News

Friday night’s game against the Brantford Blast will be the biggest game of the Allan Cup Hockey season for the Dundas Real McCoys. The outcome  is expected to set the stage for the post-season action.

Last Friday, a highway traffic accident and a short bench of 14 players did not deter the Norwood Vipers from staging a valiant effort against the Real McCoys, only to lose 4-3 at J.L. Grightmire Arena. The next night, the McCoys trounced Welland Whalers 7-3 in the Welland Arena.

"This Friday's game against Brantford may very well decide all of the playoff positions after this past weekend,” said president and general manager Don Robertson.

“We play Whitby and Brantford so we will control our destiny. Welland and Norwood both played well, and we know how tough that can be after you have been eliminated from the playoffs, so we take our hats off to them for such a fine effort."

Robertson noted Daren Machesney played in net last Friday.

“He played well and now we know that we have three solid goalies as we head into the playoffs,” Robertson said.

On Friday, Dundas hosts Brantford at 7:30 p.m. at  Grightmire.  No date has been set for the game between Dundas and Whitby, which was postponed on Saturday, Feb. 1 because of inclement weather.

The twin victories moved the McCoys into second place in the ACH with a record of 16 wins, four losses and two overtime-shootout losses for 34 points.  Brantford Blast dropped into third with a record of 15-6-0-1 (31 points), while the Whitby Dunlops took over the League lead with a 17 wins, four losses and one overtime shootout loss (35 points).

Last Saturday night, four players registered three-point nights.  League scoring leader Scott Mifsud, and Ryan Christie each had two goals and an assist, while teammates Nick Smith and Jason Ward added a goal and two assists apiece. Darryl Smith picked up a goal and an assist as Greg Stewart set up two Dundas scoring plays.

David DiGironimo turned in an all-star performance in the Norwood net as the McCoys outshot the Vipers 39-29 while edging them 4-3 the previous night. Joe Koudys earned the second star for Dundas with a pair of goals. Scott Stafford and Steve Hurst had the other Dundas goals.  The game’s third star went to Norwood’s Darren Doherty with two goals and an assist.  Mike Banks had the other Norwood goal.
