One thing you can emphasize about the newest Marauder hoops recruit Erin Burns is that she is very experienced at winning basketball games.
McMaster coach Theresa Burns (no relation) says is very happy to get a commitment from the Hamilton St. Thomas More guard, who has been a key part of OFSAA Quad-A gold medal teams for each of the last three seasons.
“Erin is a tough competitor who knows how to win and what it takes to win,” Burns said about her latest recruit.
“Erin is a very intelligent person and player, who reads and anticipates plays very well. She's an exceptional defensive player especially off the ball, where she helps, steals or draws charges consistently each game. She will bring that high basketball IQ and a tremendous work ethic to our program and will be a wonderful addition to our lineup."
The younger sister of current Marauder player Liz Burns, Erin was named to the Hamilton Separate School All-Stars in 2013 and played in the Hamilton Spectator Classic. Her record of success extends to her club exploits as she helped the Blessed Sacrament U17 juvenile girls’ team to the 2012 Ontario Basketball Association Division 1 championship.
“I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a Marauder,” said Burns, who has made the honour roll in each of her years at St. Thomas More. “I am very interested in the science programs at McMaster and being one of the best academic schools in Canada it was clear that it was the right fit for me.”
Burns will miss out on playing with her sister as Liz graduates after this season, but she will reunite with current Marauder Danielle Boiago, who was a teammate on the 2011 provincial championship squad.
“As I started looking at other schools to attend it was clear that McMaster was the right fit for me,” Burns said. “I am extremely excited to be a part of the Marauder women's basketball team and to start bleeding maroon.”
Burns brings the number of Marauder recruit commitments to two, as she joins Linnaea Harper of Newmarket who committed last month. The Marauder staff continues to work the recruiting trail and hopes to announce more commitments in the coming weeks.
