The public is invited to tour the Mountain’s newest hospital this weekend.

Guided tours at St. Joseph Healthcare Hamilton’s new $581 million mental health hospital at West 5th and Fennell will run every ten minutes between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday.

Free parking will be available in the parking lot of the old hospital off West 5th and there will be a shuttle to take visitors to the main entrance off Fennell.

A marketplace will be set up in the atrium near the entrance featuring a variety of displays and information about hospital services.

St. Joes took possession of the five storey, 855,000 square-foot hospital from the building consortium last month and staff training has been taking place at the new facility since mid December.

Staff at the former Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital will begin moving into the new complex over three weeks starting with the health records department next week.

About 200 patients from the old hospital are slated to move in on Feb.9.

The bigger, brighter state-of-the-art mental health facility will accommodate up to 305 in-patients, compared to 214 beds at the current hospital and all but three of those rooms are for single patients with en-suit washrooms featuring hands-free, no-tap sinks that are run by motion sensors.

In addition, there is a 5,860 square-foot gymnasium on the second floor which features a mall-like corridor that includes an activity room, used clothing store, salon and coffee shop plus.

There are five meeting rooms and a 300-seat auditorium for lectures and conferences.

The new hospital will also provide community diagnostic services such as MRI, breast imaging, x-ray and ultrasound.

Landscaping work includes 16 courtyards around the hospital and a pedestrian plaza at West 5th and Fennell.

Starting in March the old hospital buildings will be torn down replaced by a soccer pitch, baseball diamond, walking paths and parking.

The new hospital, to be officially known as the Margaret and Charles Juravinski Centre for Integrated Healthcare in recognition of the couple’s $10 million gift to a St. Joes’ fundraising campaign in 2011, will include a museum featuring the history of mental health services in Hamilton.
