Longtime Ward 3 councillor and Hamilton Police Services Board chair Bernie Morelli has died.
Morelli was first elected as a public school board trustee in 1988. He was elected to Hamilton city council in 1991 and continued to serve as Ward 3 councillor until his death. His service with the Hamilton police board, in multiple stints, spanned nearly a decade.
In a media release, Hamilton police chief Glenn De Caire praised Morelli's commitment to public service.
"Mr. Morelli served at great length as a member of the Hamilton Police Services Board and as the chair of the board for over nine years. Bernie held a commitment to public safety and maintained the focus of making Hamilton safer for all citizens," De Caire stated.
"On behalf of the women and men of the Hamilton Police Service, Deputy Chief Girt and Deputy Chief Leendertse, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the Morelli family, the Hamilton Police Services Board and to Mayor Bratina and the family of councilors who have had the privilege of serving the citizens with Mr. Morelli as a colleague."
