Avalanche gears up for second-half run

Ancaster News

By Larry Robertson, Special to The News

Seven members of the Ancaster Avalanche were key players in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League All-star and Top Prospects games in Port Colborne, and the club is now taking aim at top spot in the Golden Horseshoe Conference in the second half of the season.

Group and team ticket specials will be in effect for Saturday’s (Jan. 11) St. Catharines Falcons matchup, as well as for the Jan. 30 Thanks 2 You Thursday game with the Fort Erie Meteors.  The pricing also applies to the Feb. 22 Niagara Falls Canucks game.  Group packages of 15 tickets are available for $50 instead of the regular day pricing of $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.

For all of these games the Avalanche is offering specially priced advance sale group tickets for all Ancaster girls and boys minor hockey teams, figure skaters and groups of family and friends. Advance sale tickets must be picked up by 4 p.m. on the day of the game. For more information contact Brian Lewis at brian@ancasteravalanche.ca or phone 905-973-9149

Forwards Luke Zupan and Zach Nieminen, defenceman Harrison Domagala and goaltender Blake Richard starred in the all-star classic, while rookies Max Balinson and Chris Klack, and general manager and head coach Ryan Kuwabara were featured in the Top Prospects game. Klack scored once and picked up three assists for Team White, which lost a 5-4 shootout to Team Blue.

Avalanche leading scorer Nieminen scored for Team Vaive in the all-star contest.  Richard, Zupan and Domagala were key players in Team Ludzik’s 10-4 victory.

Ancaster returns to action on Friday, Jan. 10 against the Canucks in the Niagara Falls Gale Centre. The game will be a key in preparation for one of Ancaster’s storied match-ups against the St. Catharines Falcons on Saturday night, Jan. 11 at Morgan Firestone Arena.  Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Avalanche are fourth in the Golden Horse Conference with a record of 18 wins, 10 losses and five overtime shootout losses for 41 points.
