Generals go 1-2 in busy weekend of Allan Cup Hockey

Stoney Creek News

The Stoney Creek Generals had a sluggish start to the 2014 Allan Cup Hockey schedule but rebounded with a 5-2 win over Welland at Gateway Ice Centre on Sunday.

Matt Smith scored twice for Stoney Creek in Sunday’s victory.

Dennis Maxwell,  Jake Guindon and Kyle Zettler also scored for the Generals, who secured just their second win of the season on home ice.

Stoney Creek went 1-2 while playing on three consecutive days against some of the league’s toughest opposition.

On Jan. 3 in Dundas, the Real McCoys buried Dundas with five unanswered goals in a 10-3 victory.

Despite the scoreline, the Generals outshot Dundas, 42-34. Kyle McQuade led Stoney Creek with a pair of goals.

Generals goaltender David DiGironimo went the distance, despite posting a save percentage of just .705.

On Saturday night in Whitby, the Dunlops built a 4-0 lead before the Generals' Matt Reynolds put Stoney Creek on the board late in the second period. Kyle Zettler made it a two-goal game at the 8:33 mark of the third, but that was as close as the Generals could get in a 5-2 loss to the Dunlops.

The Generals elected to start goaltender Daniel Suedin, who stopped 32 of 37 Whitby shots. The Generals were outshot 37-27.

Stoney Creek sits fourth in the Allan Cup standings at 6-7-1-1 with nine games remaining in the regular season.

The Generals will face another tough test when they take on the first place Brantford Blast this Friday, Jan. 10 in Brantford. The Blast will be looking to avenge a 7-5 loss to the Generals on Dec. 22. Friday’s game time is 7:30 p.m.
