Time is running out to send in a suggestion for the new Mountain high school's name.
The new high school, which the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board says will open in 2016, will be constructed on land at the foot of Upper Sherman, south of Rymal Road.
The name will also be used for Barton Secondary School starting in the fall, as Hill Park high school closes in June and Barton and Hill Park students form a new student body.
Over 200 suggestions have been received so far, said a board spokesperson, but no names will be made public until the submission deadline.
The board says it is looking for names which:
• reflect HWDSB’s vision, mission, commitments and community composition
• provide inspiration to students
• have community and district acceptance
• be appropriate for the whole district
• have local community, district, provincial, Canadian or international significance
• address underrepresented groups
Submissions, including rationale for the name of the school, must be received by 4 p.m. on Jan. 28, either online at hwdsb.on.ca/feedback or by mail to Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board; 120 King St W, Suite 1120; Hamilton, Ont.; L8P 4V2; Attention: Research Officer (E-BEST).
Trustees are expected to approve the new name this spring.
The decision to close barton and Hill Park was made in May 2012 after a contentious 15-month high school closure review. Originally, both schools were to be shuttered in June 2015, when the new high school on the south Mountain was supposed to open. The closure of Hill Park was moved up a year because of an accelerated decline in enrolment at both schools targetted for closure.
