Hamilton All Star Jazz Band concert pays tribute to Linc

Ancaster News

The Hamilton All Star Jazz Band’s Linc to the Future concert will celebrate the life of its 25-year patron, the Honourable Lincoln M. Alexander, a great Canadian, proud Hamiltonian, and life-long lover of Big Band music.

An extraordinary evening of swing will performed by young musicians whose lives have been enriched by their participation in the jazz band, thanks in large part to Linc’s patronage. The musical event will reprise and expand upon a concert held in 2011 that showcased two dozen of Alexander’s favourite 1940s Big Band songs.

Alexander will be present by video, taped during an interview with TVO’s Steve Paikin, to introduce each of his chosen pieces.

The concert will raise funds for the Lincoln M. Alexander Scholarship Fund, which will allow many more developing musicians to have the opportunity to discover and hone their skills.

Alexander developed a love of swing-era Big Band music while living in Harlem as a teen in the late 1930s. The music touched his soul, and throughout his life, Alexander was nourished and inspired by this style of jazz.

“Listening to the HASJB takes me back to Harlem and the Apollo Theatre where I met my heroes - Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Ella Fitzgerald and many others,” he once said.

Alexander served as honorary patron of the Hamilton All-Star Jazz Band for 25 years as a way of ensuring others could have their lives enriched by the music that had such a profound impact on his life.

Dr. Russ Weil, band founder and artistic director, said, “To have Linc as an honorary patron was a thrill. One of Canada's most prominent citizens....and from Hamilton. He spoke many times at our concerts about how great the band was and how much he loved the music. He was an inspiration to us all.”

The Linc to the Future Concert will be held at Redeemer University College Auditorium, 777 Garner Rd. E., Ancaster, on Saturday May 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 ($20 for seniors and students) and are available at www.hamiltonallstarjazz.org or at Cavallo Nero Restaurant, 370 Wilson St. E. in Ancaster, 905 648-8888.
