Preparing for new challenges

Stoney Creek News

Mike Pearson, News editor

First, I'll take a moment to introduce myself.  My name is Mike Pearson. For the past six years, readers in Ancaster have recognized me as a reporter for the Ancaster News.

During that time, I've enjoyed meeting hundreds, if not thousands of great people, from different walks of life, each with a compelling story to share.

With excitement, and a little sadness, I have moved on to  a new opportunity as editor of The Stoney Creek News.

One of the best things about being a reporter is the ability to closely connect with the community. As I look forward to this new opportunity, I hope to learn more about Stoney Creek, its rich history, its annual events and its people.

I have a diploma in print journalism from Sheridan College and a degree in English from McMaster University. Prior to joining the team at Hamilton Community News, I started my career at The Grand River Sachem in Caledonia.

While I now live just above the escarpment near Concession Street, I've always had strong family ties to Stoney Creek. My father and uncle were both raised here, and my grandmother, uncle and aunt still reside in Stoney Creek.

Years ago, my uncle and aunt first met while working at the Stoney Creek Dairy.

Like Ancaster, Stoney Creek was once its own separate municipality. While it's now officially part of Hamilton, I believe Stoney Creek will always have  its own unique identity.

As publishers of community newspapers in Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek and Hamilton Mountain, we at HCN understand that Hamilton is a city of many unique communities.

Each week we focus on what's happening in your community, from a hyper-local perspective.

There's certainly no shortage of news happening in Stoney Creek as we look ahead to the remainder of 2013. Recent upgrades to the Stoney Creek Recreation Centre, coupled with the long-awaited Gateway Ice Centre, will surely be welcomed by sports enthusiasts.

The new Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School is now under construction, while six Stoney Creek public schools have been earmarked for a closure review.

Looking ahead, I'm sure we can expect a spectacular re-enactment to commemorate the bicentennial of the Battle of Stoney Creek on June 6.

As I look ahead to the future, I must also reflect upon the past. I have enjoyed meeting the great people of Ancaster over the past six years. I have thoughly enjoyed meeting you all and telling your stories.

I look forward to developing the same kind of rapport with the people of Stoney Creek. If you have a good story idea, please let us know. You can reach me at 905-664-8800 ext. 338 or by email at
