Community meeting planned for Good Friday Road Races

Ancaster News

The Hamilton Cycling Club will host its Good Friday Road Races in Ancaster this year.

Now in its 61st year, the Good Friday Road Race is a high-level competition in what is known as the Ontario Cup series of road cycling races. The event takes place on March 29.

A community meeting will be held on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at Marritt Hall Room C in the Ancaster Fairgrounds. Road closures will be in effect with local traffic only restrictions in place.

The course map resembles a large rectangle. Riders will start and finish within the Ancaster Fairgrounds.

As they begin, riders leave the fairgrounds through Gate 3 to Trinity Road. They will then head south on Trinity Road, turn left on Sawmill Road and left on Carluke Road. Riders then head north on Shaver Road, then turn left again on Book Road. Then, to end each lap, cyclists turn north on Trinity back to the start and finish line within the fairgrounds.

Following the advice of Hamilton Police, race organizers will have a full road closure on Trinity Road, which will affect the section of Trinity between the Ancaster Fairgrounds and Book Road. Police will give local residents and businesses access to the closed section of Trinity when riders have passed.

Riders will race in various categories based on age and ability. All races will cover several loops of the same 15.5-km course, with the number of laps determined by the riders’ category.
