Scrapped cop training pares controversial Hamilton police budget by $255,000

Stoney Creek News

Cancellation of a May training course for new constables is shaving another $255,000 from the controversial Hamilton police budget before it goes to city council.

In a revised $140.7-million budget to be presented to the police services board on Tuesday, Chief Glenn De Caire notes that the scrapped Ontario Police College training session won’t allow for the hiring of the first 10 of 20 new officers in May as initially planned.

All 20 will now be hired in September, when the next mandatory training course is scheduled, reducing the over all budget increase to just over $5 million, or 3.71 per cent – down from the 3.9 per cent the board approved in January.

It’s the third cut to the budget since an initial version proposed an increase of 5.25 per cent, or $7.12 million.
