More social housing for west Mountain

Work on five storey complex to begin next summer

Work on a $7.5 million social housing apartment complex at 690 Stone Church Road West, just west of Upper Paradise, is slated to begin early next summer.

“It is a much-needed project on the Hamilton Mountain,” said Brenda Osborne, director and chief executive officer at CityHousing Hamilton, which oversees nearly 7,000 units spread over 1,265 properties in the city with more than 13,000 residents.

The five-story, 50-unit apartment building will go up on some open space between another apartment building to the east and a townhouse complex on the west side.

All three properties are owned or rented by CityHousing Hamilton.

Osborne said there are 5,700 families in the city on the waiting list for rent-geared-to-income housing.

The new complex will feature mostly 500 square-foot, one-bedroom apartments and Osborne said she is hoping many single tenants who are currently living in two and three bedroom social housing units will move to the new building and free up those larger apartments for families who are in need of public housing.

Coun. Terry Whitehead (Ward 8, west Mountain) said he supports the project.

“At the end of the day it will enhance that plot (of land) compared to what it is now,” said Whitehead, who held a public meeting on the project last year. “It’s addressing the acute issue of affordable housing in this community.”

Whitehead noted there is an abundance of non-profit housing on the Mountain and this latest project is another example of how social housing is part of the community in the upper city.

Completion of the new apartment building is slated for the end of 2014
