Tina Thomas has earned another trip to the provincial high school badminton championships.
Thomas, a St. Jean de Brebeuf student, won the girls’ singles title at the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championship in Milton April 23.
She’ll now compete at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championship tournament in Markham, May 1-3.
The boys’ doubles team of Nick Hill and Nick Chong, from St. Mary, also earned their way to OFSAA.
“Generally, I felt I played very well today,” said Thomas, who has won four Hamilton Catholic singles titles.
“During the first set of my first match, I was nervous and unsure of myself, which led to a loss. However, every game after that I played confidently and consistently.”
Thomas, who has also captured three Kairali Sports Club singles titles, recovered from a 21-19 setback to win her opening match, 21-12, 15-5. She then swept two straight in each of her final two contests to earn first-seat player from GHAC status.
“At OFSAA last year,” she said, “I won two games and lost two. I was one match away from entering the quarter-finals in B flight. My goal for this year is to medal in any flight or, at least, to do better than I did last year.”
