Mountain Legion holding D-Day service

Hamilton Mountain News

Frank Warren will recall his experience on Juno Beach

By Mark Newman, News Staff

The sounds of gun fire and exploding bombs on Juno Beach remain vivid for Frank Warren.

“It’s him or you, the enemy or yourself,” recalled the 91-year-old east Mountain resident who, as a member of the Royal Engineers, was part of the D-Day invasion of the Normandy coast of France on June 6, 1944.

It was the largest invasion in history and it marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany in the Second World War.

The retired Stelco employee and only surviving member of the Stelco war veterans group will be speaking at the Decoration Day event commemorating the 70th anniversary of D-Day at the Veterans Memorial, a parkette at Mount Hamilton Branch 163 of the Royal Canadian Legion on Limeridge Road on Sunday.

The public is invited to attend the service that begins at 10:30 a.m.
