Sackville celebrates 20 years on Saturday

Hamilton Mountain News

Hamilton seniors are invited to take part in 20th anniversary celebrations at the Sackville Hill Seniors Recreation Centre from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this  Saturday (Dec 1).

There will be a variety of activities including an information fair about government services for seniors, tours of the centre, entertainment, light refreshments and a cake-cutting at 11 a.m.

Located on about two acres of land at Upper Wentworth and Mohawk, the centre has about 2,400 members ranging in age from 55 to 97.

The centre is named after Sackville Hill, one of Hamilton’s leading building supply merchants.

Hill died in 1950 and in his will he bequeathed 20 acres of land in the Upper Wentworth and Mohawk area to the City of Hamilton that was to be used as parkland for Mountain residents.

He also bequeathed $75,000 for the development of the nearby park, which was named Sackville Hill Park in his memory.

In 1992, May Hoyle, Hill’s daughter, gave the city permission to sever a small section at the south-end of the park for a recreation centre to serve the growing seniors population in Hamilton.
