Big music, big hair is a big hit

Ancaster News

By Debra Downey, Senior Editor

Just when you thought Theatre Ancaster performances couldn’t possibly get any better, along comes the song and dance magic of Hairspray.

Billed in the program as “Big Musical, Big Hair and Big Comedy,” Hairspray is sure to go down as one of the “Big Hits” in Theatre Ancaster’s history.

The hugely entertaining and visually stunning show is jam-packed with fabulous musical talent, top-notch choreography and brilliant set design that transports audience members back to the tumultuous 1960s, when Johnny Carson ruled late night, the Jetsons were everyone's favourite television family and the Cuban missile crisis and Mississippi riots grabbed newspaper headlines.

Against this volatile backdrop, Hairspray tells the tale of Baltimore teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream to dance on an after-school television show. When the loveable teen eventually wins a role, she becomes an overnight celebrity and launches a campaign to integrate the show.

In the Theatre Ancaster version, a faultlessly cast myriad of characters joins, or tries to thwart, Tracy’s goal.

A really neat mix of video compliments the non-stop on-stage action, which is all backed by the professional sounds of an 18-piece orchestra.

Hairspray is a delightful way for all member of the family to spend a couple of hours, so plan to join the more than 4,000 smiling faces who have already enthusiastically rose to their feet to give Hairspray’s cast and crew a standing ovation.

The show continues Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 1 with a matinee at 2 p.m. and a final evening show at 8 pm.

Good walk-in tickets are still available at the box office, West Wing foyer, Ancaster High School, 374 Jerseyville Rd. W. at Meadowbrook. Tickets may also be reserved by calling 905-304-SHOW (7469).

Hamilton is very fortunate to have a gem like Theatre Ancaster located right in its own backyard.

Kudos to all of the talented and dedicated individuals who have brought, and will continue to bring, the very best in musical theatre talent to appreciative local audiences.

We can hardly wait until 2013, when the equally intriguing Made in Canada — 50 Years of Canadian Hits arrives on the Theatre Ancaster stage.
