The unbeaten St. Thomas More Knights will face defending champion Cardinal Newman Cardinals Tuesday in a rematch of the Hamilton Catholic high school senior football final.

More advanced to the championship with a 39-10 win over Bishop Tonnos in semi-final action while Newman hammered St. Jean de Brebeuf 42-7 in the other semi-final.

Both games were played Wednesday on the turf at More.

“We feel (Cardinal Newman) is still the team to beat,” said Knights head coach Claudio Silvestri. “They’re the defending champion and until you beat the man, you’re not going to be the man. We know going into that game they’re the team to beat. We have a lot of respect for them.”

More beat Newman 37-21 on Sept. 28. It was the Cards’ only loss of the regular season.

The Knights’ defence held the Tonnos offence in check for most of the game and contributed a pair of touchdowns.

Linebacker Santino Gallo scored on a 40-yard interception return and safety Jordan Brucculeri found the end zone on a 20-yard interception return, both in the first quarter.

“I did my thing, that’s all,” said Gallo, who also booted a 20-yard field goal, three converts and a kick-off single. “We had a pretty good plan and we executed everything and we did what we had to do.”

Mike Brown opened the scoring for More in the first quarter.

He caught a pass form quarterback C.J. Paduano and ran it 70 yards for the TD. Andrew Obrien added a two-point convert.

Paduano hit Brucculeri with a 20-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Kyle Shallow added a major on a two-yard run in the third quarter.

The Titans points came off a 20-yard TD pass from Matt Michalski to Trevor Kennedy in the first quarter and Josh Labbe kicked a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter.

In the other semi-final, the Cardinal Newman Cardinals jumped out to a 28-0 first half lead and never looked back.

Daniel Peterman caught four touchdown passes from quarterback Jake Marquette and kicked six converts to lead the Cardinals.

Marquette also threw touchdown passes to Matt Lascelle and Mitchell Atlee.

Shawn Seibel scored Brebeuf’s only TD of the game on a six-yard run in the third quarter.

The HWCAA senior football championship kicks off at 1 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 13) at Ron Joyce Stadium at McMaster University.
