A 16-year-old boy died in hospital after being hit by a van as he tried to cross Upper James Street at the Duff Street intersection on Friday evening.
Peng Kangshun, who attended Columbia International College, had only been at the Hamilton school 10 days before he was killed.
“When things like this happen, it’s devastating every time,” principal Ron Rambarran said. “It’s a really sad day for the entire school community. Certainly, our hearts and our prayers go out to the families and everyone involved.”
Kangshun had come to Hamilton from eastern China to improve his English before applying to Canadian universities.
Hamilton police said the teen was crossing at Duff Street at about 6:30 p.m. on Friday during poor weather conditions when he was hit by a commercial van driven by a 62-year-old Caledonia man.
The collision and reconstruction team continues to investigate and police ask any witnesses who have not yet spoken to them to call Det. Const Walter Niblock or Det. Const. Matt Hewko at 905-546-4753.
