Canada focused on jobs and the economy

Dundas Star News

With Parliament back in full swing for the autumn session, the government of Canada remains focused on jobs and the economy — particularly given the slow growth, fiscal challenges and worrisome economic signs that continue to haunt the United States and Europe.

Legislation is being introduced to continue implementation of the 2012 Economic Action Plan as outlined in the federal budget last spring. These measures — to help small businesses hire, encourage business investment in the economy and ensure Canada maintains the fiscal balance that has been our strength in uncertain times – are working.

In mid-September, the National Post noted, "Canadians are aware that – almost alone among western powers – we’ve managed so far to avoid the worst effects of the economic collapse that has gripped so many other countries."

We cannot be complacent. That’s why just this week the federal government announced an ambitious Red Tape Reduction Plan – another part of our overall efforts to keep the economy moving.

Switching gears, I'd like to publicly recognize nine individuals who were honoured with Diamond Jubilee Medals for their array of selfless acts in the community.

Congratulations to Flo Binkley, Tom Bontje, Shirley Glauser, Sandy Gray, Madeleine Levy, Timea Nagy, Dorothy Richardson, Toni Skarica and Allan Waxman.

These individuals are the first of 30 Diamond Jubilee Medals that I will have the honour of presenting locally. Because we have so many outstanding volunteers and talented people in Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough and West Hamilton, other individuals have already been recognized with medals from the military, provincial government and other civic institutions at all three levels of Her Majesty’s government.

Duty has defined Queen Elizabeth’s reign throughout times of change and challenge — just as it defines the best of the best honoured with these medals.

Congratulations to all local recipients. You are part of an elite group of 60,000 Canadians receiving these medals in honour of Her Majesty's 60 years as our sovereign.

David Sweet is MP for Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Westdale.
