Margaret and Charles Juravinski now have a second Mountain hospital named in their honour.

Officials at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton announced this morning (Wednesday) that the $438 million, 850,000 square-foot mental health hospital currently under construction at their West 5th campus will be officially called the Margaret and Charles Juravinski Centre for Integrated Healthcare.

The name is in recognition of the couple’s June 2011 gift of $10 million to St. Joseph’s Timeless Care, Tomorrow’s Discoveries campaign which was the largest single donation in the organization’s history.

St. Joes is the latest local healthcare group to honour the Juravinski’s.

In 2006 the Hamilton Health Sciences board of directors agreed to name the new hospital on the Henderson General Hospital site the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre in recognition of the millions of dollars the Dundas residents have donated to healthcare in Hamilton.

“It gets a little bit embarrassing to have Juravinski this, Juravinski that,” said Charles Juravinski at the naming ceremony on the former Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital grounds next to the new facility. “But you kind of get used to it and you kind of get to like it.”

Juravinski was visibly moved when a large banner featuring the couple’s names was unfurled from atop the new hospital.

He asked that the new facility be called the Juravinski Centre for Integrated Healthcare with their first names removed and encouraged everyone at the ceremony to donate to charity.

The event also celebrated the topping-off of the new three-storey building which means the main hospital structure has been completed with only the inside work left to be finished.

Along with as many as 305 mental health beds, the new hospital will feature medical out-patient clinics and diagnostic services.

It is slated to open in the summer of 2014.
