Five court expansion nearly complete

A major expansion will allow the Ancaster Tennis Club to expand its membership base by 35 per cent.
A grand opening for the new five court tennis facility at 291 Lodor Street is scheduled for May 26.
Set in a north to south orientation, the expansion is expected to help the club grow from about 370 members to a maximum of 500. The redesign also means players won’t have to stare into the sun when delivering a serve.
With its former three courts facing east and west, players facing away from the sun had a distinct advantage in the summer heat.
Rick Burjaw, a former club president, has been working on the expansion effort for nearly five years.
“Weather permitting, we could have it open to our members by this weekend,” Burjaw said on Monday.
Described as a state-of-the-art facility, the Village Green Park complex has been funded by $110,000 raised internally by the tennis club, a $200,000 city contribution and an $80,000 Trillium grant. The Ancaster Tennis Club is incorporated as a non-profit organization.
A splash pad is also planned for the northwest portion of the park. Ancaster’s two Rotary Clubs have launched a joint fundraising project with a $250,000 goal. To contribute, visit www.ancasterkids.ca .
Workers have begun painting lines on the new cushioned asphalt courts. New lighting is designed to illuminate the courts without unnecessary glare on neighbouring homes. Automatic sensors ensure lights are turned off when the courts are not in use. A small picnic area will be located behind the tennis clubhouse, with access to the rail trail.
Despite recent inclement weather, Burjaw said the club has received a solid response to a membership drive which continued last weekend. Over 170 members have already signed up, including several new members.
The new expanded facility will allow the club to enter inter-club matches which require at least four courts.
The May 26 grand opening will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Registrations can be made online at www.ancastertennis.ca . Fees range from $30 for youth to $97 for adults and $172 for a family.
