Businesses use social medial to get donations for food bank

Thanks to the social networking outlet baby formula is beginning to reappear on the shelves at the Neighbour to Neighbour Centre food bank.
“We cannot have hungry children,” said Sandie Susi, manager at the Upper Gage Garage and long-time supporter of Neighbour to Neighbour Centre
Susi said when she learned from the Mountain News via Twitter that the centre had run out of baby formula on Monday, she retweeted the information to Gorilla Cheese and the Cupcake Diner, two popular mobile businesses that were slated to set up in the garage parking lot at Upper Gage and Queensdale earlier today (Wednesday).
Susi said the two businesses retweeted the notice about the baby formula shortage to their customers and asked them to bring some along when they come by to get a grilled cheese sandwich or a cupcake.
By 3 p.m. several bags and boxes of baby formula, baby food and other food items had been dropped off at the Upper Gage Garage.
”It’s amazing what social marketing will do,” said Denise Arkell, executive director of Neighbour to Neighbour Centre, who came by to pick up the donations.
Arkell said they still need more donations of baby formula, baby food and other food items from the community as demand for their food bank services is up 25 percent over March last year.
The centre received about 18 jars of baby formula on Tuesday and it was all gone in a matter of hours.
On Saturday, about 20 staff, customers and other supporters from Upper Gage Garage will be holding a foodraiser for Neighbour to Neighbour Centre at Fortinos on Mall Road from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Susi said they will be looking to collect more baby formula and baby food.
