Exhibit explores the ugly and beautiful

Ancaster News

The Dundas Valley School of Art has launched a ceramic exhibit entitled Look: drawings and ceramic sculpture by Kirsty Wilson.

Through her mysterious and organic-looking ceramic sculptures, Wilson hopes to demonstrate beauty can be found in things people don't normally pay attention to. She came up with the concept while teaching kindergarten students and taking the youngsters outside on exploration exercises.

“When you walk down the street, you may notice landscaped flowers and street lamps, people, of course,” said Wilson. “But what about the scraps of debris, or fallen branches from trees?”

Through her unusual use of ceramics, Wilson hopes gallery visitors of all ages are stumped by her sculptures and take the time to think about what they are looking at and experience the tension between ugly and beautiful.

The exhibition runs until the end of the month at DVSA, 21 Ogilvie St., Dundas.
