Valet parking – while still in your vehicle?

It seems that every year, automotive engineers around the world attempt to outdo one another with amazing features using advanced technology. Soon, 100 per cent autonomous (self-driving) vehicles may be available for sale – but that’s another topic for another day.

While technology and its advances can and often do make differences to our lives – how we drive and how safe our vehicles have become, not every innovation lasts. One such advancement which has gained momentum and further acceptance since its introduction to an eagerly waiting world back in 2008/2009 is Ford’s active park assist. Available in several popular models at Heaslip Ford Sales Ltd. as an option, active park assist is an ultrasonic-based sensor system and electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) designed to position the vehicle for parallel parking. In fact, Ford’s system has the ability to parallel park in very tight parking spaces – as small as 1.2 times the vehicle length. This sophisticated system calculates the steering angle and quickly steers the vehicle into a parking spot.

OK, so it is a little more involved than that. There are three stages: first, the driver activates the system by pressing a centre console button; this initiates ultrasonic sensors which measure and identify a feasible parking space.
Then, the system prompts the driver to accept parking assistance. At this point, the steering system takes over and directs the car into the “approved” parking space, hands-free. Not 100 per cent automatic, the driver still shifts the transmission and operates the gas and brake pedals. Finally, a visual and/or audible notification advises the driver about the proximity of other cars and objects and provides instructions.

While the steering is all done automatically, the driver remains responsible for safe parking and can interrupt the system at any time by grasping the steering wheel.
