Sophisticated hands-free technology

With so many people in this country relying upon a vehicle and an ever-growing “population” of tractor-trailers and trucks, our roads have never been busier. It is crucial that drivers focus on the job at hand: we need to pay attention.

On October 26, 2009, Ontario introduced legislation banning the use of hand-held devices while driving. This law makes it illegal for drivers to talk, text, type, dial or email using hand-held cell phones and other devices. “Hands-free” use means it is not held during use and the driver is not physically interacting with or manipulating it. On March 17, 2014 stronger fines were put in place; if you’re caught using a hand-held device you’ll face a set fine of $225 plus a victim surcharge and court fees for a total of $280.

Ford engineers recognized that there could be issues with distracted driving and set about to develop internal automotive systems to literally take specific functions away from the driver and provide them with convenient options to communicate with their car – and the outside world – all using an individual’s voice. That was the beginning of Ford’s sophisticated MyFord Touch and Sync technology – which many Heaslip Ford Sales Ltd. customers have taken advantage.

MyFord Touch is an in-car communications and entertainment system developed by the Ford Motor Company, based upon Microsoft technologies. This technology comes factory-installed with current Ford vehicles and is based on the Microsoft Auto 4.0 software platform.

The latest version of MyFord Touch is the next generation of Ford Sync which enables drivers of Ford cars to seamlessly integrate most mobile phones and digital media players into their cars. Operation of these devices, utilizing advanced Sync functionality, is performed using voice commands, touch-screen inputs, the vehicle’s steering wheel, radio controls, Bluetooth and even Wi-Fi connectivity. MyFord Touch is capable of receiving text messages and reading them aloud to the vehicle’s occupant.
