When you think of Canada, what comes to mind? Maple syrup? The beaver? Timbits? These are all quality answers, but none of them describe Canada as well as hockey does.
Hockey is Canada’s national past time and at the grassroots of it is shinny.
Shinny, also known as pick up hockey or pond hockey, can be played just about anywhere. It is a great way to stay in shape while keeping your hockey skills sharp. Shinny can also help bring communities closer together.
The Gateway Ice Centre in Stoney Creek is now offering shinny for adults and youth. Our shinny is reasonably priced at $6 for day time adult and youth and $10 for evening and weekend adult.
Youth shinny is separated into four age categories — six to eight years old, nine to 11 years old, 12 to 14 years old, and 15 to 17 years old.
Our shinny is rookie and co-ed inclusive and we encourage all skill levels to join in on the fun.
Every shinny hockey game is a little bit different. The general rules are that the puck stays on the ice, there are no goalies, and no body contact.
However, full hockey equipment, such as shoulder pads, gloves, and CSA approved helmets, is required to play both adult and youth shinny.
Please check our schedule for shinny dates and times, we update daily.
