Sabres lose semi in shootout; play for bronze

After finishing first during the preliminaries, the Stoney Creek Sabres were upset by the fourth-seeded Edmonton Thunder at the national female midget hockey championships on Friday.

The Sabres fell to the Thunder in overtime for the second-straight night, this time in a shootout as Edmonton prevailed 2-1.

The Sabres will now play the Sudbury Lady Wolves in an all-Ontario bronze medal match-up tomorrow at noon at Gateway Ice Centre.

Jessica Healey, a member of Canada’s gold medal Under-18 team, netted a first-period goal for Edmonton, which stood up until Stoney Creek’s Claire Merrick knotted the score late in the third.

Healey also scored the shootout winner.

Edmonton advances to play the Weyburn Gold Wings Saturday at 4 p.m.

For the Thunder, tomorrow’s game will be a shot at redemption. Despite appearing at all of the previous Esso Cup tournaments, the team has never won gold.

The gold medal game will be carried coast-to-coast on TSN2.
