The Stoney Creek Recreation Centre has closed temporarily due to flooding.
The centre closed yesterday afternoon when staff identified concerns about water infiltrating into the hydro vault, creating unsafe conditions. All recreation programs at the site were also cancelled yesterday.
The city is working with Horizon Utilities and the general contractor who worked on the facility construction to determine the root cause of the flooding and take the necessary corrective measures. An immediate and temporary solution will be implemented next week and the facility is expected to remain closed up to and including Friday, March 8. More details will be provided as they become available.
The repairs will postpone all programming held at the recreation centre; however, the City of Hamilton is contacting all participants registered at this location to make arrangements to extend the programming in order to complete a full session.
For patrons who are not able to make the extended dates for programming, the City of Hamilton will credit participant’s Recreation accounts with the pro-rated amounts for missed classes.
To request a credit, please contact the Stoney Creek Recreation Centre before March 15, 2013. The City of Hamilton also invites participants with a city-wide membership for aquatic programs to take advantage of the pools throughout the city during the closure. “Staff is working around the clock to deal with the issue and to have it properly rectified so we can reopen the facility as soon as possible,” said Rom D’Angelo, Director of Facilities Management and Capital Programs. “We apologize to the Stoney Creek community for this service disruption.”
