The St. Martin of Tours community may be small but it has a big heart. During this holiday season, SMT student council decided to raise funds for charities within the Hamilton community.

A call went out to Wilma’s Place, an alternative education program, within their school board. SMT students wanted to donate canned food items. Wilma’s Place not only helps their students and their families but also reaches out to the community by helping inner city schools and assisting social workers who know of families in need.

Teachers offered students the opportunity to throw a pie in their face if the school collected at least 1,000 cans. They had an overwhelming response. SMT staff, students and parents donated more than 1,400 canned food items for the needy.

SMT student council also wanted to put smiles on children’s faces, so they joined forces with City Kidz.
Students were asked to bring in new, unwrapped toys to help families who were struggling this holiday season. SMT students, parents and staff once again stepped up to the challenge and collected 150 toys in two weeks.
