Serve it up your way at CC Swirls

By Laura Lennie, News Staff

There’s a new yogurt joint in town and it’s bursting with flavour.

CC Swirls opened its doors earlier this month at 826 Queenston Rd.

The family-owned, self-serve frozen yogurt shop offers more than 80 yogurt flavours – from dairy and gluten-free to sugar-free – and more than 30 topping options, plus sauces. Customers can simply pick their yogurt flavour, swirl it, top it up, weight it and then buy their healthy creation for the tasting.

New locations of the chains Yogurty’s and Menchie’s are popping up all over Toronto, but there is nothing like that locally.

Owner Sam Corso said two of his daughters came across a self-serve frozen yogurt franchise a while ago at a show in Toronto.

He said his family didn’t like the idea of being told how to run their business, so they decided to start their own franchise.

“I thought, ‘I know how to run a company, but I don’t know anything about yogurt,’” laughed Sam, who owned a dye casting company for about 30 years and also ran a construction company. “I did some research on the Internet and came across Sam Haider, who is the CEO of the Yogurt Distribution Company. I called him up and he’s been helping us ever since.”

The Corso’s opened a CC Swirls – which stands for Corso’s Creamy Swirl – in September in Burlington before establishing the location in Stoney Creek.

The family also will be opening another CC Swirls in December in Niagara Falls.

“We wanted to establish a location in the Hamilton area; basically, we live here and wanted to open a local shop,” Sam said, when asked how they came to choose the location in Stoney Creek. “This (location) presented the best opportunity for us. It’s got pretty well everything we’re looking for and it’s truly been an amazing experience so far.”

Haider said consumers are “driving the trend” toward this type of offering.

“They are the ones who are actually seeking these kinds of places. I think they’ve tried the coffees, energy drinks of the world out there and they’re finding that this option is not only a dessert, but also good for you, so it really resonates with them,” he said. “Parents enjoy the healthy aspect of it and, of course, the best part for kids, what they get really excited about, are the choices, the options and that they are, essentially, in charge of creating their own masterpiece. They can swirl their yogurt, top it up the way they like and just enjoy it.”

Haider said CC Swirls provides a place where families can hang out and spend time with their loved ones, all the while creating and enjoying the best part of dinner – dessert.

“When Sam was envisioning the shop, he wanted a place where people could sit together and enjoy the experience,” he said. “For CC Swirls, I think the most important thing, after the quality of yogurt and toppings, is creating a comfortable and fun atmosphere and great overall experience for customers. I think visitors will definitely feel that.”

CC Swirls shop manager Jeff Ireland said visitors can anticipate a few things when they come through the doors.

“They can expect an enjoyable experience, healthy choice, good value and friendly staff,” he said. “The customers seem to be enjoying everything thus far and it’s been an enjoyable experience for us too. It’s a fun business, on both sides of the counter.”
