Reluctant readers sure to enjoy page-turning Snake in My Toilet

By Debra Downey, Senior Editor

Life is tough for 13-year-old Cam. His dad has left the family to work overseas, the school bully made him cry and he’s been suspended. Can things get worse?

Yes, indeed. A boa constrictor appears in his toilet. The media descends and fills Cam’s apartment with mess and mayhem.

This is the intriguing premise of Dundas-based author Gisela Sherman’s fourth book, Snake in My Toilet.

Published by HIP Books in Toronto, the book is part a series for children who have difficulty reading.

“Reluctant readers don’t want easy ‘baby’ books,” said Sherman. “HIP books have lots of action, humour and excitement in a simple plot, at their age and interest level.”

Snake In My Toilet was inspired by a real incident that was covered by the media for three days about 20 years ago. Sherman’s original book on the topic was about three times as long as the latest edition. The original, There’s A Snake In The Toilet, was published by Simon and Schuster in New York and won the Hamilton and Region Arts Council award in 1995.

“This version has been shortened, updated and made accessible for reluctant readers,” said Sherman.

Sherman came to Canada from Germany in 1954, grew up in Dundas and earned her B.A. at McMaster University. After 13 years as an elementary teacher and school librarian, Sherman taught creative writing at Mohawk College and McMaster University. She is a past president of The Canadian Society of Children’s Authors, Illustrators and Performers and writes fiction for young people and non-fiction for adults.

Snake In My Toilet is Sherman’s fourth book,  preceded by King Of The Class, There’s A Snake In The Toilet and Grave Danger. Two more of Sherman’s books are due out next year.
