An exciting week of action put the Mohawk men’s volleyball team in the battle for top spot in the west region of the OCAA.
The Mountaineers pulled out a thrilling five set victory at Redeemer Jan. 24. The Mountaineers won the first two sets, dropped the next two and then managed to survive a 25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 22-25, 18-16 set nail-bitter.
Ian Cameron had 17 kills, one service ace and one stuff block for Mohawk. Justin Scapinello contributed 12 kills, three aces and three blocks.
Marcin Jedrzejewski added 10 kills, one ace and three blocks.
Mohawk head coach Matt Schnarr said it was a match the team really needed in their bid to host a playoff match.
Last Friday it was off to Windsor where Mohawk swept the St. Clair Saints 25-9, 25-10, 25-19.
Scapinello had seven kills and two aces.
With four wins in nine days, the Mountaineers improved to 11-3 and to within two points of first place as they head to North Bay for a pair of key weekend matches with Canadore and Nipissing.
They won the first set, but once again the Mohawk women’s volleyball side could not sustain their success and bowed to the Redeemer Royals 25-23, 22-25, 22-25, 19-25.
Chi Chi Chuks-Mady led Mohawk with six kills, four aces and three blocks.
Jenna Gignac had nine kills.
Three nights later in Windsor saw a good effort, but the Mountaineers lost in five sets at St. Clair, 25-19, 13-25, 18-25, 25-18, 10-15.
Chuks-Mady again paced Mohawk with 18 kills, one stuff block and 17 digs.
MacKenzie Lawrence played a strong match too, with 21 defensive digs, seven kills and three service aces.
Mohawk’s record dropped to 3-11.
They visit North Bay for matches on Friday and Saturday against Canadore and Nipissing.
Aminu Bello scored 35 points as the Mohawk men’s basketball team whipped the visiting Fanshawe Falcons 85-73 at the Fennell gym last Saturday.
It was also a vintage Manny Campbell who accumulated 17 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and eight steals.
Taylor Dowhaniuk had 10 points and 10 boards and Tanner Lane also scored 10 points for the 9-4 Mountaineers.
Mohawk moves on to a huge weekend in Sault Ste. Marie where they play at Sault College and Algoma.
The Mountaineers entered the week only two points behind the west-leading Algoma Thunderbirds.
A valiant effort by the Mohawk women’s basketball team, but they came up short against powerful Fanshawe in a 59-51 loss to the Falconsin Hamilton last Saturday.
Rachelle Abella and Marina Ciannavei each had 11 points, while Lindsay Bokor chipped in with seven.
Mohawk saw its record slip to 5-8.
The Mountaineers visit Sault College on Friday and Algoma on Saturday.
