Motives and Murders series arrives at Metro

By Debra Downey, Senior Editor

The Metro grocery story in Dundas was transported back in time last weekend for a Motives and Murders television episode.

Motives and Murders is a drama/documentary that features high-profile murder cases and  the emotional toll on family members and law enforcement.

Executive producer Alex Bystram said the episode shot in Dundas is about the 1986 murder of Donna Kitowski in Las Vegas, Nevada. The girl was abducted by a stranger and taken to  the desert, where she was raped and killed.

The Metro in Dundas was used to depict a Vegas supermarket. The 1986 serial rapist stalked his victims at a local grocery store, which is ultimately how detectives tracked him down and made the arrest.

While in Dundas, crews shot scenes of Donna’s abduction, as well as elements of the police investigation that took place at the grocery store.

Motives and Murders has a studio in Hamilton, but Bystram said a considerable amount of filming takes place at locations throughout the community.

The Dundas location was chosen primarily for its similarity to the real location and for the support crew received from store staff, said Bystram.

“We’re a crew of 25 people, plus a dozen actors and extras, with half a dozen support vehicles,” he said. “We couldn’t pull this off without their co-operation. The only thing the location doesn’t give us is the 90-degree heat in Vegas in July.”

In its third season, Motives and Murders is produced by Cineflix Productions. The episode filmed in Dundas is slated to air on the Investigation Discovery channel in the U.S. in mid-October. It also airs on the OWN Network in Canada.
