McMaster Athletes Care’s mission to provide an enriching camp experience for Hamilton’s youth received a major boost this morning with the help of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and Sport Chek.
Through its partnership with Jumpstart, McMaster Athletes Care accepted a donation of sports equipment totalling about $8,500, including hockey sticks, skateboards and helmets which will be given to campers on scholarship at McMaster camps.
The announcement is part of the ongoing Kids to Camp campaign, through which McMaster Athletes Care has provided a camp experience to 1,000 underprivileged youth in the community.
Campers who receive scholarships are given full tuition for camp, food and transportation to and from campus. Now, through Jumpstart’s generous gift, those same children will have the opportunity to participate in physical activity and play long after their camp experience has passed.
McMaster Kids to Camp partners with several community organizations, including the Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brothers and Sisters, CAS and City Kidz, to select camp participants. Those underprivileged children who are selected have the opportunity to attend two weeks of programming at the McMaster summer camp of their choice.
The goal of the program is to break down the barriers to post-secondary education and summer camp faced by many in the Hamilton community, and allow children in the area an equal opportunity for play, positive mentorship and sport participation.
