Maddie’s mom releases book

The spirit of Maddison Babineau will no doubt be nearby Sunday at Wellwood Resource Centre.
That’s where Sharon Babineau, mother of the girl the city knew simply as Maddie, will be signing copies of her new book, “The Girl Who Gave Her Wish Away.”
“It has been a two-year journey of … emotions, but I am so excited that I have been able to write her story and capture at least some of her spirit and compassion and get it out to the world,” says Babineau.
Maddie, a St. Thomas More student, was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma at the age of 12. She was given a wish from the Children’s Wish Foundation and chose to build a school in Kenya. She also made jewelry from her hospital bed and sparked a campaign to raise enough money to build a well beside a school run by Free the Children.
When the cancer returned a third time, Babineau decided to upgrade her goal to build a whole village in the African country. She died in May 2007 at the age of 15.
“Maddie was extraordinary in her simplicity and wise beyond her years. These pages are a tribute to the incredible things she did,” Babineau writes in the book’s foreword. “As her mother, I feel a responsibility to bring this message to the world, to share our lessons: about courage, acceptance, celebrating, surviving, giving, and finding peace in the midst of all the trials and challenges of life.”
The book signing is Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Wellwood Resource Centre, 501 Sanatorium Rd. The book will be available for $15. It is also available at amazon.ca.
