Lions Foundation to speak on ‘hearing’ dogs

How dogs can help the help the hard of hearing is the subject of an educational seminar next Wednesday.

Speaker Rhonda Workman, head trainer of hearing ear dogs and special skills dogs for Lions Foundation of Canada, will talk about how properly trained dogs can assist individuals who are hard of hearing or deaf to detect sounds they are unable to hear on their own.

The dogs, which cost thousands of dollars to train but are made available free to users, have been taught to distinguish sounds, make physical contact with their handlers and lead them to whatever is making the noise, be it someone at the door, an alarm clock or a smoke detector.

The Dec. 12 seminar, presented by the local chapter of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association, is at 7 p.m. at Southgate Presbyterian Church, 120 Clarendon Ave. Admission free for CHHA members; $5 for others. To register or for more information, email or call 905-575-4964.
